Phulbani: Two warders of Phulbani district jail were suspended in connection with the death of an under trial prisoner who was attacked by another inmate inside the jail premises on December 1.

Southern Range DIG (Prisons) Raghunath Majhi issued the suspension order on Tuesday.

The suspended warders have been identified as Mahendra Dalei and Laxman Behera. Phulbani jail superintendent Gariba Sahu informed that DIG suspended both the officials for dereliction of duty in connection with the incident.

An under-trial prisoner identified as Laxman Nayak of Tummudibandh area had died after being attacked by his fellow inmate Kanhu Charan Pradhan at Phulbani jail on Sunday morning.

Kanhu who is serving a lifer in the jail allegedly hit Laxman with a stone on his head. Subsequently, Kanhu was immediately rushed to Phulbani hospital in a critical condition and later shifted to Berhmapur MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
