Bhubaneswar: Barely a week after a city based builder was gunned down by miscreants, a 23-year old pharmacist student was allegedly stabbed to death by a group of goons for opposing hooliganism on Monday evening at busy Chintamaniswar area in the capital city.

Sources said, the deceased identified as Manmohan Pradhan, a resident of Delang in Puri, was pursuing M.pharma at Jaydev College near Naharkanta. On Monday evening, Pradhan had come to meet his classmate Laxinarayan Rout at the latter’s rented house near Chintamaniswar square where a group of people allegedly involved in the crime were staying.

Since the group was always indulged in creating nuisance, it did not go down well with Rout, sources added. He apprised the matter to the house owner who asked them to vacate the room by month end. Being irate over it, they allegedly beat up Rout.

On the fateful day, Pradhan had come to mediate and solve the issue after his friend informed him over phone. The accused erupted scuffle with Pradhan when he asked them not to disturb his classmate any more following which they chased him and caught near Chintamaniswar pond before stabbing to death. Even as Rout immediately rushed him to Capital hospital, he succumbed to the injuries on the way.

According to the statement of Rout, police registered a case and are investigating the case. “Seven to eight people are involved in the murder as per statement of the deceased’s friend. We are looking into the matter and making efforts to identify them”, police commissioner RP Sharma said.

Notably, a builder was shot dead on August 12 at IRC village area in the city following a land dispute.
