Bhubaneswar: Think twice before littering waste next time you visit a railway station as you might end up in coughing up higher penalty for the violation. As per the notification of East Coast Railway (ECoR), the existing penalties for violation of cleanliness rules have been revised across all three divisions- Khurda Road, Waltair and Sambalpur.

"In order to ensure Swachh Bharat Mission in Railway premises and implementation of Polluter Pays principle as per Municipal Solid Waste Rule-2016 and in the light of NGT’s order and to maintain uniformity in the quantum of penalties to be imposed at different categories of stations across all three divisions- Khurda Road, Waltair and Sambalpur with effect from February 10," said ECoR in a statement.

Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, Special Squad, RPF and other Railway officials have been directed to take appropriate steps to ensure all round sanitation in and around railway stations.

Senior officials informed that the railway staff will detect and penalize the offenders for littering waste, cooking, spitting and use of plastic below 50 micron as per plastic waste rules.

The revised fines will be collected as per the new classification of Stations by Railway Board. Most of the stations have been classified as Sub-Urban (SG), Non-Sub-Urban (NSG) and Halt Stations (HG).
