Bhubaneswar: Noted litterateur Umesh Patri who was selected for the Odisha Sahitya Akademi award for 2009 rejected the coveted prize terming it as a wall between writers and readers.

“I don’t consider any award as a prize of literature. It creates wall between writers and readers”, Umesh Patri said through a letter to the secretary of Odisha Sahitya Akademi.

In his letter, he mentioned that an awardees’ book gives frustration to the readers and deprived the book lovers of reading good writings. The distribution of prizes among the selected litterateurs has created two sections, upper and lower class, in the literature society, he said in his letter.

“I am an ordinary writer and don’t want to be separated from my readers. I want to remain free from any prizes and awards,” Patri stated.

Notably, Patri’s name had been announced for coveted Odisha Sahitya Akademi award for 2009 for his book ‘Aryanka Adinibas’.
