Panic after elephant herd strays into human settlement in Keonjhar

Keonjhar: Panic gripped locals of Jhumpura block in Keonjhar district after a herd of eight elephants was sighted in the mango orchard near the block office today.

According to sources, the elephant herd strayed into the orchard from Balibandha side triggering panic. Forest department officials reached the spot and have launched an operation to drive the elephants away, sources said.

Archana Mallick, IIC, Jhumpura Police Station said “Eight elephants have strayed into Jhumpura tehsil area. Officials of police, Forest and Fire departments are making efforts to drive the elephants away.”

In a similar incident, a herd of 22 wild elephants had strayed into Nahabeda village under Jhumpura block of Keonjhar on October 3 last year.
