Berhampur: A doctor is drawing large crowds at Ganjam district book fair for his paintings, some of which had found their place at national exhibitions held at Kolkata, Dhanbad, Himanchal Pradesh and other places.

Dinabandhu Sahoo, the 41 year-old doctor of district headquarters hospital at Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district deal with various aspects of life like love, devotion, loneliness and death.

The paintings, put up at a stall at the fair, also deal with triumph over evil and are done in water colours and acrylic. His oeuvre has been appreciated by commoners and artists as well.

"The paintings are based on events of day-to-day life," says Sahoo when asked. He has put up for display only 11 out of his 300 paintings.

"The paintings are based on themes and drawn like a mature artist," said Basant Patnaik, an artist.

The doctor says he had received no training in the art of painting. "I became interested in drawing and painting after I saw `jhotis` and `rangolis` of my mother during festivals during my childhood at Chendipada in Angul district."

He took up the brush since his childhood days and participated in various national and International exhibitions. "I had participated at Kalabartanyash, an International art festival at Ujjain last year where painters from different countries participated." The doctor also writes dramas and poems in Odiya.
