Cuttack: Padma Shri D Prakash Rao, renowned for running a children's education and welfare programme in the State was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital after he fell sick on Tuesday. He complained of chest pain during his tour to Angul to attend a program.

According to Rao’s wife, P Vijaylaxmi, the Padma Shri awardee was initially admitted to the Causalty intensive care unit (ICU) and then shifted to the Medicine ICU of the hospital.

Speaking about Rao’s health condition Vijaylaxmi said, “His health condition was alright when he went to Angul to attend a program. But there he complained of chest pain and partial paralysis on one side of his body. He is being treated in Medicine ICU.”

“As he is a Padma Shri, we got a bed in the ICU soon and his treatment is going on well,” she added.

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen ordered free treatment of Rao. Beside, he directed Cuttack District Collector to monitor the treatment facilities.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan prayed for the speedy recovery of Rao.


It is worthwhile to mention here that Rao received the fourth highest civilian award of India on March 11 this year for his selfless service towards providing education to slum children in Cuttack. Rao, who has been selling tea since he was six years old, has been dedicatedly working for welfare of the underprivileged and orphan children.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also praised the Cuttack tea seller in his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
