A jaundice outbreak has been reported from Ward No. 10 under the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), with more than 20 people affected so far, prompting civic authorities to intensify monitoring and containment measures.
Officials said five people are currently undergoing treatment at various hospitals. The exact source of the outbreak remains unclear, even as field inspections and sample collection have been stepped up in the affected locality.
Civic Authorities Assess Ground Situation
Cuttack Mayor, the Municipal Commissioner, and officials of the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) visited the ward to review the situation. Water and blood samples are being collected from residents to determine the cause of the spread.
According to reports, the CMC has begun replacing water pipelines connected to residential houses after multiple cases of jaundice were detected. Health teams are also visiting individual households to conduct medical tests and identify additional infections.
Sources said the civic body was initially unaware of the scale of the outbreak. However, upon receiving reports, authorities accelerated response measures to prevent further spread.
Residents Raise Water Quality Concerns
Residents of the affected ward have raised concerns about the quality of drinking water supplied to their homes.
“The water coming through the pipes is not fit for consumption. It appears yellow and has a foul smell. No one from the administration pays attention to our health. Such water should not be supplied for drinking,” alleged a local resident.
Another resident expressed hope that corrective steps would be taken soon. “We hope clean water is provided and necessary measures are taken to curb the spread of jaundice,” the resident said.
As a precautionary measure, officials are inspecting all households in the locality. Trace chlorine levels in the water supply are being checked, and bleaching powder has been sprayed on roads and inside houses to contain the outbreak.
