Well-known social media influencer Shubhankar Mishra is facing escalating backlash after making controversial remarks about the PuriSrimandir, sparking concerns that his comments may attract legal action. In response to strong opposition from devotees, temple servitors and Jagannath followers, the Puri District Collector on Saturday announced that the matter will undergo a formal investigation. Senior servitors also warned that if Mishra does not immediately visit Puri and issue an apology, they are prepared to lodge a formal complaint against him.
Reports indicate that devotees and locals have questioned the basis of Mishra’s claims.
Jagannath Culture Researcher Harihara Kanungo criticised the statements, saying, “People without proper knowledge of Jagannath culture are making baseless comments on social media. Misleading the younger generation into believing that their love for each other will be affected by visiting the temple is unacceptable. Legal action must be taken against anyone who spreads such discouraging remarks about the Puri Jagannath Temple.”
He added, “Lord Jagannath never discriminates among His devotees. Such remarks are unfortunate. I urge all devotees, couples and youngsters to keep their faith intact and continue visiting the temple.”
Senior servitor Gourahari Pradhan echoed the sentiment, stating, “The pain felt by our Sevayat community and devotees cannot be expressed in words. Shubhankar Mishra’s statement had no basis; it was made for publicity. Anyone hurting religious sentiments with such remarks should face legal consequences. He should visit the temple and perform Danda Pranam as an apology.”
Pradhan further said, “We met the Collector yesterday, and he assured us the matter would be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken.”
Background to the Controversy
The controversy stems from Mishra’s claim that couples in romantic relationships who visit the Srimandir before marriage would not be able to marry, citing what he described as a “curse” of Goddess Radharani on the temple.
According to his version, Goddess Radharani once visited Srimandir to see Lord Krishna in the form of Jagannath but was stopped by servitors as the consort of the Lord was not permitted inside. Angered, she allegedly cursed the temple, giving rise to the belief that visiting couples would not succeed in their relationships.
