OTV Impact: Mentally ill old man chained since 4 years released

Berhampur: A mentally ill old man chained for the past four years by his family members in Patapur area of Ganjam district was freed from his shackles today.

After OTV telecast the plight of the old man identified as Surendra Sethi on January 12, officials of the district administration rescued the elderly man and unchained him. Surendra has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he is undergoing treatment in the psychiatric department.  Following the development, Surendra’s family members are also happy to see him getting treatment.

It may be noted that Surendra lost his mental balance four years back, following which his family members chained him apprehending that he could harm someone. Moreover, they shunted him out of the house. Sethi was forced to beg on the streets since.

After OTV reported the incident, Berhampur sub-collector Diganta Routray directed the BDO to counsel Surendra’s family members and make necessary arrangements for his rehabilitation.

“We consulted several doctors and also took help from a black magician, but it did not work. After his condition worsened he tried to beat our family members, and so we had to chain him. But now since he is being treated, we will bring him back and take care of him,” Surendra’s son said.

Psychiatrist Sarmistha Priyadarshini said Surendra is suffering from Schizophrenia since last seven to eight years. She also assured that after two to three months of regular medication he will be completely normal.
