Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar received several new animals and birds on Friday as part of an ongoing exchange programme with the Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Zoological Garden in Surat, Gujarat.
In an earlier phase of the exchange, Nandankanan had already acquired a silver pheasant, an Indian star tortoise, an Indian grey wolf and five smooth-coated otters. The otters’ arrival marks their return to the Bhubaneswar-based zoo after nearly 25 years; records show they were last housed at the facility in 2000. The exchange was approved by the Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi.
New Arrivals Placed Under Quarantine
According to zoo officials, all newly received animals have been placed in quarantine enclosures as per protocol. They will remain under observation for about a month before being shifted to their respective display areas.
Plans Underway to Introduce African Cheetahs
The zoo is also progressing with its plans to introduce African cheetahs for the first time. A dedicated enclosure is being developed, and a tender for its construction has been issued. Nandankanan aims to bring five cheetahs in a phased manner within a year.
