Worldfish to help Odisha improve fish production

Bhubaneswar: Worldfish, a global aquaculture and genetic improvement organisation today assured the the State government to assist it in meeting its target of doubling fish production in the next five years.

Michael Phillips, Director of Worldfish made a presentation before chief minister Naveen Patnaik about plans to improve fish production in the State.

The organisation proposed to use “Genetically Improved Farm Tilapia (GIFT)” for enhancement of fish production in the State.

The major objective of the partnership was to improve the quality of fish seeds, good aquaculture practices through a number of actions like expansion of coastal area ponds, to form fish farm clusters in the rim of Chilika and providing international market linkage for Odisha fish.

The partnership would continue for a minimum period of five years, an official release said adding the organisation also proposed to include fish in the overall nutrition plan of the State.

Worldfish, based in Malaysia, has its activities in Bangladesh, Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar and some other countries. It has been successful in improving fish production in Bangladesh, said Fisheries and animal resource development secretary B Sethi.
