UU poll unrest: PG council decision soon
Bhubaneswar: Reiterating their demands to conduct the students’ union election, students of Utkal University on Monday staged dharna in front of the office of the PG Council after locking the office.
The students alleged about the dilly-dallying attitude of the University authorities over the matter.
“The university authorities are diplomatically dealing with us. On one hand, they are not giving us the exact reason for cancellation of the election while on the other, they are telling to let us know about the decision after another round of discussion. We have a strong feeling that the authorities are hand in glove with the students who had won the election last year. On the recommendation of these students, they are probably trying to delay their announcement so that the election process would be delayed and if the election takes place, these students will have the advantage as there will be little time left for the new aspirants for campaigning,” student leader Anirudh Sahu alleged.
“Since last two days after the announcement by the PG Council chairman on cancellation of students’ union election, we are yet to receive satisfactory reply from the university authorities. We met the vice chancellor and the PG Council chairman today and submitted them the memorandum demanding ouster of non-students from the university campus and smooth conduct of elections. The vice chancellor expressed his inability to meet our demands and told us to inform about the decision after consulting the PG Council chairman in a couple of days”, rued another student leader Subrat Behera.
Contacted, vice chancellor Prof Ashok Das said considering the fact that the university has a huge campus, security and safety of the students are the prime concern of the university authorities.
“Those who have submitted memorandum to us are our students. So it is our duty to look into whatever complaints they have”, he added.
Earlier in the day, the agitating students went to the office of the PG Council and staged dharna after locking the office gate. Following information, council chairman Ranjan Kumar Bal rushed to the spot and told the students that the university authorities will have a final decision on the election in 2-3 days after a meeting with the Residential Committee, Advisory Committee and PG Council Committee.
