Trucks to go off roads from June 9

Cuttack: After the bus owners, it is now the turn of the truckers to take their vehicles off roads. The Odisha Truck Owners’ Association today declared that it will go on strike from June 9 protesting the State government’s circular ordering cancellation of permits and licences of truck owners and drivers after accidents.

Addressing mediapersons here, association secretary Rabi Satpathy said that over 1.3 lakh trucks will join the stir if the government fails to fulfill by June 9 its 11-point charter of demands including hike fare. “We also demand to bring necessary changes in the circular issued by the State government recently,” Satpathy added.

Meanwhile, Transport minister Ramesh Majhi said his department will hold discussions with the truck owners to find out a solution to the truckers’ woes.
