Rameswar Ashram murder case: Police allowed 2-day remand of accused

Bhubaneswar: A court here allowed police to take Rabindra Patra alias Rabi Patra, one of the accused in the murder of a youth in Rameswar Ashram in Salipur on a two-day remand.

The police had prayed for a three-day remand of Patra who had absconded after the crime was committed.

Yesterday the case took a new turn after the investigating officials informed media that the chief of ashram, Anand Atma Ram Baba alias Alok Bisoi was not involved in the ghastly act. The police, after arresting other three accused in the case said that baba had not committed the crime.

Addressing media, Cuttack SP (Rural) Guru Das Kundu said, “On the fateful day Bisoi was present in his ashram along with his 92-year-old father Daulat Bisoi of Lekhanpur. Madan, Pabani, Rabi, Tulu and Patra of Chahapada had come to the ashram and as the main gate was locked, they climbed the gate to enter it. They approached Bisoi and demanded Rs 10,000 but when Bisoi denied they started assaulting him.”

Despite being assaulted when Bisoi did not agree, Tulu attempted to strike him down with a chopper. When Bisoi dodged the attack, the chopper struck Patra and he fell unconscious. Soon after, Bisoi ran away and surrendered at Japakuda police outpost, said Kundu.

The panicked four beat Patra to death and burnt the body. The accused returned to their village and spread the news that Bisoi had killed Patra. The villagers along with the four reached the ashram and ransacked it, Kundu added. The four were taken to the Dhyana Mandir in the ashram where the entire act was staged, he added.

“Bisoi is not involved in the murder, however we are investigating other allegations brought against him,” the SP said adding that after completion of two days remand, Bisoi has been produced in court on Wednesday.
