Odisha farmers’ onion ordeal continues

Kalahandi: Onions farmers in the State are facing a tough time this year. After reports of low yields from hybrid seeds in Nuapara districts, hundreds of hectares of onion cultivation in Dharmagarh area of Kalahandi district have suffered complete crop loss due to unseasonal and incessant rains.

In the current year, 650 hectare in Golamunda block, 30 hectare in Dharmagarh block, 500 hectare in Junagarh, 200 hectare in Jayapatna and 42 hectare in Koksara block were under oninon cultivation. However, incessant unseasonal rains just ahead of cultivation have ruined the crops.

Harried farmers are now demanding compensation from the government for the losses suffered. In the meantime, the horticulture department informed that a detailed report of losses will be given to the government after proper assessment.
