No farmer suicide in State due to crop loss, loan burden: SRC
Bhubaneswar: In a development which is certain to draw Opposition’s ire, the Odisha government today said that no farmer in the State has taken extreme step in the recent past due to crop failure or burden of loan.
Briefing media on farmer suicide cases, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Mohapatra said though the government has received 111 farmer suicide cases allegedly due to crop loss, Collectors’ report on drought situation don’t attribute any of the cases to crop failure or burden of loan.
“Collectors’ reports show that no farmer has taken the extreme step because of burden of agriculture loan or crop failure,” he said.
The official informed that of the 111 death cases, the State government has conducted investigation in 106 death cases.
“Of the 106 cases, 56 farmers haven’t taken any loan while 26 have taken loans from co-operative banks,” said Special Relief Commissioner.
“Only 16 farmers have taken crop loans from nationalized/private banks,” he stated.
