Nabarangpur: In a shocking incident, a nine-day old baby, who was branded with a hot iron rod by the village quack in the name of treatment at Gorama village under Jharigaon block yestreday, died at the Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital on Monday morning.

According to reports, the infant was taken to the village quack by her parents Budu Kalar and Bindu Kalar when the baby cried incessantly due to stomach pain.

However, he had to be admitted to district headquarters hospital after her condition turned critical.

“An infant from Gorama village near Jharigaon branded with a hot iron rod by a quack came here with critical burn injuries. The baby is being treated”, Jugal Behera, a doctor of special newborn child care unit (SNCU), had said yesterday.

But despite all efforts by Dr Behera and others, the baby succumbed to his injuries this morning.

Meanwhile, the Nabarangpur collector formed a 5-member committee to probe the matter and to take legal action against the culprits.

Notably, a 22-day-old baby boy of Badiguda village under Borrigumma block of Koraput district was also branded with hot iron rod by village quack as part of treatment earlier this month.
