Newborn falls off bed, critical

Balangir: In a bizarre incident, a newborn became critical after falling off the bed in labour room here at district headquarters hospital today. The critical baby has been shifted to Burla medical college after its condition deteriorated.

Sources said Mamata Tandi was admitted to the gynecology and obstetrics department for delivery with help of ASHA worker, Yashoda Badhia. However, medical officials and nurses advised her to go for cesarean section when she experienced no labour pain for long time.

They allegedly demand some advance money for operation to which she expressed inability. However, a BPL beneficiary Mamata and her family arranged a small amount which the officials did not receive, Mamata’s husband Bighnaraj alleged. They did not care properly during delivery which led to the unfortunate incident, he said.

On the other hand, pediatrician referred the baby to Burla as it had crying problem. “It did not cry and take food. It had also problem in breathing. We referred the baby to Burla after administering primary treatment”, pediatrician in-charge of special newborn care unit Saroj Kumar Tiadi said.

Meanwhile, district administration sought report from the chief district medical officer (CDMO) over the incident. “Action will be taken against the erring medical official after report”, collector M Muthu Kumar said.
