Murmu to take oath on Monday as governor

Ranchi/Bhubaneswar: The governor-designate of Jharkhand, Draupadi Murmu, will take oath of office on May 18, a Raj Bhavan communique said in Ranchi today. The oath-taking ceremony would be held at Birsa Mandap at the Raj Bhavan.

The communique also said that outgoing governor Syed Ahmed will leave for Manipur tomorrow to take over as governor of that State. A felicitation ceremony has been organised in honour of Ahmed at the residence of Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das in Ranchi later in the day, an official release said.

Murmu, tribal leader and a two-time BJP legislator from Rairangpur Assembly constituency of Odisha, was appointed as the new governor of Jharkhand by President Pranab Mukherjee yesterday. Murmu became the first woman leader from the State to hold a gubernatorial assignment.

Commenting on her new role, Murmu has said, “It is not just a post, it is a responsibility and I will carry it out with full dedication.” She has thanked the Central government for giving her a chance to serve people.
