Logjam continues in Odisha Assembly

Bhubaneswar: Pandemonium marred the proceedings in Odisha Assembly for the sixth consecutive day today. As soon as the House assembled for the day, members of both treasury and Opposition benches created noise over different issues forcing Speaker Niranjan Pujari to adjourn it till 11.30 am and again till 3 pm.

BJP legislators stormed the Speaker’s podium and tried to prevent him from taking seat when he entered the House while Congress members staged a silent protest at their respective seats tying black cloth around their mouth and holding banners. Ruling BJD members, at the same time, rushed to the well of the House waving banners and posters and shouted slogans. Unable to run the House, the Speaker adjourned it till 11.30 am.

Meanwhile, BJD alleged that the saffron party showed disrespect to the Speaker. “They have shown disrespect to the Speaker which is a rare incident in a democratic system. We demand suspension of the BJP members,” BJD spokesperson Sameer Das said.

When the House reassembled at 11.30 am, similar scenes were seen when the ruling party members rushed to the well and shouted slogans demanding BJP members’ suspension, forcing the Speaker to adjourn it till 3 pm.

Notably, the Assembly has been witnessing logjam since the first day of the winter session due to tussle between the treasury and Opposition benches. Opposition Congress and BJP are adamant over holding detailed discussion in the House on chit fund scam whereas BJD members are stalling the proceedings in protest against Polavaram project and less Central assistance.
