Koraput schools rely on stream water

Koraput: Around 250 students of Government High School and Upper Primary School at Pukali in Pottangi block of Koraput district are depending on stream water with the lone tubewell on the school premises lying defunct for the past two years.

Even the mid-day meal is being cooked with stream water, students said.

“We trek around 500 metres from the school to the nearby stream to collect drinking water. Though the stream is polluted, we have no other option”, said a class IX student of the school.

Admitting that the students are facing A lot of problems owing to absence of safe drinking water facility in the school, Headmaster R N Pradhan said “we know that stream water is not safe but we have no option”.

The concerned officials have been apprised about the matter but in vain, he said.

Children are unable to use toilets in the school as there is no water in the school and they are forced to relieve themselves in the open.

Executive Engineer, rural water supply and sanitation (RWSS), Koraput Manoranjan Mali said necessary steps would be taken to ensure that drinking water facility was restored in the school as soon as possible.

When contacted, Koraput District Collector Yamini Sarangi said “I’ll look into the matter and necessary steps will be taken.
