Life imprisonment for Hyder, 2 others in mines trader murder case

Bhubaneswar: Eight years after the brutal murder of Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra, a mines trader of Keonjhar, the Additional District Judge Court-II, Bhubaneswar, on Saturday sentenced prime accused Hyder and two of his associates- Bhabani Shankar and Sarat Sahoo- to life.

The court also awarded 10 years imprisonment to two other accused- Ganapati Ray and Jajati while acquitting six persons due to lack of evidence in the sensational murder case.

“Direct evidences are there against Sanjay alias Bhabani Shankar, Seikh Hayder and Sarat Sahoo in kidnapping Rasmi Ranjan and his driver. Ganapati Ray and Jajati Biswal were involved in collecting ransom on behalf of Hyder”, public prosecutor Sudhansu Sekhar Swain said.

Petition will be filed against the acquitted persons in the higher court, he added.

The mines trader was abducted from Sahid Nagar area in Bhubaneswar on May 27, 2007 when he had come to purchase marble slabs.

The abductors later demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore from Mohapatra’s family members who had paid Rs 1 crore for his release.

Police, who was investigating the case, found two half-burnt bodies from Jamshedpur area in Bihar of which one of the bodies was identified as Mohapatra after the DNA test.

While the police had registered cases against 10 accused including gangster Hyder, the court had recorded the statement of 46 witnesses in the case so far.
