Hearing of Justice Naidu panel ends today

Bhubaneswar: Hearing of Justice AS Naidu Commission of Inquiry, which is probing murder of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and the large scale ethno-communal riot in Kandhmal in 2008, will end on Friday.

Justice Naidu was appointed as the head of the one man Kandhamal commission last year after demise of Justice Sarat Chandra Mohapatra, who was probing the riot since 2008.

The hearing has been going on for eight years. A total of 825 affidavits have been filed whereas 325 witnesses were heard by the commission so far.

Though Secretaries of Home, Revenue, Law and SC/ST Development departments were asked to depose before the commission, the officials have not turned up yet.

Defence counsel Suresh Pujari asked for the appearance of Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda and Azad before the commission.

The inquiry report will be submitted by the commission to the State government by December this year.
