Five women held for snatching gold chains of devotees

Puri: Five women of West Bengal were arrested on the charge of snatching gold chains, mobile phones and wallets of devotees accompanying the cart carrying the sacred neem tree log for making of new idol of Lord Jagannath at Pipli, police said today.

The women, suspected to be members of a chain looting syndicate based in Hooghli district of West Bengal, were caught while snatching gold chains from women devotees at Pipli on Bhubaneswar-Puri highway on Wednesday, a police officer said.

The gang had snatched 31 chains, many wallets and mobile phones from the devotees when the ‘Daru Sagadi’ was moving between Pipli and Dandamukundapur.

‘Daru Sagadi’ is a specially made cart which carries sacred neem tree logs for making the new wooden idols of the presiding deities of the 12th century shrine – Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Sudarshan – during “Nabakalebar” by the temple artisans.
