Two more debt-hit Odisha farmers end life over crop loss

Nabarangpur/Sambalpur: Farmer suicides in the State refuse to abate with two more cases being reported over same reason of crop failure and loan burden on Tuesday morning one each from Nabarangpur and Sambalpur districts.

Sources said Labanya Santa of Purunapani village under Nandahandi block in Nabarangpur district had grown paddy in 3 acres of land for which he had taken some amounts from banks and private money lenders. However, the standing crops were damaged due to shortage of rainfall following which he lost mental balance, family sources said sources added. Unable to bear the burden of debt, he consumed pesticide.

Meanwhile, some local Congress activists reached the village and met the members of the bereaved family.

In a separate incident, farmer Susil Patra of Khagatipali village under Dhanakauda block in Sambalpur district took the drastic step in a similar style. Susil had borrowed Rs 50,000 from village money lenders and more sums from banks for agriculture, family sources said.

He was under severe mental stress after his crops were ruined by the scanty rainfall. He consumed pesticide two days ago and was admitted to Burla hospital where he died during treatment.
