Two more farmers end lives in Odisha; toll mounts to 26 in 11 days
Balangir/Nabarangpur/Keonjhar: Farmer suicides in Odisha continue unabated with two fresh cases reported from Nabarangpur and Balangir districts on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Bhaga Paika of Purunapaniguda village in Nabarangpur district and Arakhit Majhi of Ghunsara village in Balangir district.
Family sources said Paika had borrowed Rs 50,000 loan for cultivation this year. However, he was unable to repay the loan as he suffered heavy loss of crops due to scanty rainfall. Under severe mental stress, Paika took the extreme step by hanging himself from a tree.
Meanwhile, Majhi, who had consumed pesticides on Tuesday, died in Balangir hospital today.
Malatham Majhi, relative of a deceased, said, “Due to scanty rainfall, the crops were damaged. He was worried on how to take care of my family and repay loans. He committed suicide by consuming poison”.
With this, the number of farmer suicide cases in 15 districts of Odisha has gone up to 26 in the last 11 days.
