Another accused nabbed in de-addiction centre murder
Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested Ashok Verma, another accused in the murder of the counsellor cum caretaker at the Prayas de-addiction centre, from Rourkela.
A team of police from Mancheswar police station arrested Verma from the steel city.
On Friday, the Commissionerate police had arrested two inmates of the de-addiction centre situated at Naharakanta on the outskirts of the city for allegedly killing its counsellor cum caretaker Sumit Behera.
While one of the accused was arrested from Cuttack, the other was caught from Balasore.
Police suspect the involvement of at least six persons in the crime and are carrying out raids at different locations to nab the others.
20-year-old counsellor Sumit Behera had to pay with his life for resisting escape attempts of a group of high-strung addicts from the de-addiction centre on December 29.
Behera, who had been working as caretaker and counsellor at the centre for the last three years, was tied up and battered mercilessly before being strangulated to death by a group of inmates who had hatched a plan to escape from the centre on New Year eve.
Another staff of the de-addiction centre was also beaten up and tied up even as 36 inmates snatched the keys and made away.
The gruesome killing appears to have been carried out by around six addicts while the complicity of others is being investigated, police said.
According to police, the escape plan was hatched by a new batch of 12 inmates, who had been admitted to the facility recently.
