Crime Branch to start Operation Smile-II today

Cuttack: The Odisha Crime Branch will start the second phase of Operation Smile-II from Saturday to trace out missing children.

“Our team, accompanied by the officials of the state Women and Child Development (WCD) department, will visit 10 states we have identified. We have contacted police officials and WCD officials of the concerned states. Our officers have been trained to find the locations in these states and trace out the missing children,” Crime Branch ADG, BK Sharma told newsmen here on Friday.

Referring to the success of the Crime Branch in the first phase of Operation Smile-2 which began on January 1 and concluded today, Sharma said as per the available reports, there have been outstanding performances in some districts like Sambalpur, Nuapada and Mayurbhanj.

“In Sambalpur district, we have recovered 20 missing children. We have also recovered a girl child of Jammu and Kashmir from Delang area in Puri district and handed her over to the Jammu and Kashmir police. Till date, we have recovered about 60 missing children. We hope that the number of the missing children would be more as we have not received complete reports from the other districts,” he added.

It may be mentioned that the State Crime Branch police had conducted a special drive in the first phase of Operation Smile-II to rescue children who were taken to other states to work as migrant labourers. Gajapati SP had rescued 10 children.

The Centre has advised the states and the Union Territories to extend all possible cooperation during inter-state rescue operations, to ensure proper provision of food, clothes, medical-aid, professional translators, psychiatrists and shelter homes for rehabilitation and reintegration before the rescue operation and to ensure that such operations are conducted in strict compliance of existing legal provisions.
