CMC Council meet turns violent

Cuttack: Tension ran high at the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) council meeting on Saturday following a face-off between BJD and Congress corporators over the issue of distribution of ration cards.

Trouble started when Opposition Congress corporators alleged that genuine beneficiaries of the city were deprived of ration cards, which was refuted by the BJD corporators. A war words ensued which later turned violent as members of both the groups indulged in a pitched battle.

Each side threw items whatever was handy. Even some turned tables upside down.

Later the BJD and Congress corporators sat on a dharna in front of the CMC office and demanded action against each group.

Talking to mediapersons, a woman Congress corporator alleged that the BJD corporators had stage-managed the incident. “In the meeting, the ruling party corporators threw glass and table, and shoved us,” she said.

Refuting the charges, a BJD corporator said the Congress corporators actually had started the trouble. “We disapprove of today’s incident and will have a meeting to pass a censure motion,” he said, adding that efforts will be made to sort out all major issues through discussions.
