Chit-fund scam: SC grants bail to Preeti Bhatia

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Mumbai-based model and TV serial producer Preeti Bhatia, who has been in Jharpara jail in Bhubaneswar since October 2014 for her alleged complicity in Artha Tatwa chit fund scam.

In May this year, Bhatia had deposited a bond worth Rs 1,17, 83, 000 crore at the court of special CJM (CBI) in Bhubaneswar as per the directive of the apex court.

Bhatia had filed an appeal before the SC challenging the order of Odisha High Court which, on March 16, had turned down her bail petition.

The CBI, which is investigating the chit fund scam in the State, in its charge sheet mentioned that around Rs 1,17,83, 000 was diverted to Preeti’s account from Artha Tatwa Group.

The investigating agency had found business links between Bhatia and AT Group chief Pradeep Kumar Sethy, who are directors in Mumbai-based Prism Heights Films & Entertainment Private Limited.

Indu Dewan, sister of Bhatia, is also lodged in Jharpara jail since October 17 this year.

Dewan is also a director of Prism Heights Films & Entertainment, where AT Group is said to have invested more than Rs 4 crore of its depositors’ money.
