Holi mishaps toll 29, victim’s kin ransack hospital
Bhubaneswar: Even as merry-making proved fatal for as many as 29 persons across the State during Holi celebrations yesterday, the friends and relatives of a youth went on the rampage and ransacked the Casualty ward of Capital Hospital here after his death.
Sources said tension prevailed at the hospital as engineering student Ankur Mohanty of Bhimapur area, who was admitted there yesterday evening after he was seriously injured in a road accident near Pokahariput in the city, was declared dead on arrival by doctors.
However, some of Ankur’s friends and family members ransacked the Casualty ward alleging medical negligence as the reason behind his death. On being informed, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
“We will examine the CCTV footage and take necessary action against the persons involved in the incident,” said DCP Satyabrat Bhoi.
The hospital authorities have requested the Commissionerate Police to beef up security there in order to avoid such incidents in future.
Meanwhile, Holi festivities turned tragedy for a host of others also in the State yesterday as 28 more lives were lost and 28 others injured due to road accidents and drowning. According to reports, 18 people were killed in road accidents while seven others lost their life in drowning while taking bath after celebrating Holi.
In a ghastly accident, three members of a family and a women were killed and two other seriously injured as the car they were travelling in, hit a tree in the Bhatli area in Bargarh district, police said.
The family members of Hemant Jain of Rengali camp in Attabira area were on their way to Shyam Baba temple at Bhatli to celebrate Holi when the car hit a roadside tree at Pipalmunda, killing three occupants on the spot.
While Jain’s wife Seema (36), son Kanha (5) and maid Kunti Behera (50) died on the spot, his 7-month-old daughter Paree succumbed to her injuries en route to hospital. Jain and his sister Priyanka sustained injuries in the accident and are undergoing treatment at VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla.
In another road mishap near Ansol, in Nimapada two persons died, when the bike in which they were travelling hit a roadside tree. In another similar mishap, one person was killed near Solapur bridge in Gopa.
According to sources, in two separate accidents in Berhempur, two persons lost their lives while two persons died in another road mishap in Patnagada.
In another tragic incident, two persons were killed on Bhubaneswar-Puri highway when their bike had a head on collision with a bus coming from opposite direction. As many as 20 passengers in the bus sustained injuries as the bus lost its control and overturned after the collision.
Similarly, in another road mishap near Rairangpur-Jasipur, one death report has been registered.
Drowning deaths have been reported from Jajpur and Salepur block of Cuttack. Two girls drowned in Kharasrota river in Jajpur district while a youth died while bathing in Chitrotpala river under Salepur block of Cuttack district after playing Holi.
Meanwhile, two people were injured in a group clash between Sagadia Sahi and Bhandari Sahi in Cuttack.
