Bhubaneswar: The State government has moved Supreme Court against the Centre`s ban on bauxite mining in the Niyamgiri hills for the alumina refinery project at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi.

This move by the State government comes after the MoEF had rejected Vedanta`s proposal to start an expansion of the refining capacity of its aluminum complex at Niyamgiri hills.

On February 25, the environment ministry had sent a notice following a Supreme Court directive asking Vedanta to shut down its copper smelter plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu for violating the environmental norms.

Notably, Vedanta has a petition pending in the High Court against the ban on mining at the Niyamgiri hills.
