Orissa HC issues notice to govt on demand for CBI inquiry into illegal mining

The Orissa High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Odisha government in connection with a petition seeking a CBI inquiry into illegal mining activities in the state. The Court has directed the state government to file its response within two weeks. 

The High Court has sought a detailed reply on the overall status of illegal mining across the state, along with specific information on the steps taken to curb such activities and the actions initiated against those involved.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice M.S. Raman issued the direction while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Shravan Kumar Deb. The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for February 10.

In the petition, the petitioner alleged that despite clear directions issued by the Supreme Court, no effective action has been taken against individuals and institutions involved in illegal mining operations in Odisha. It was further alleged that the state government has failed to strictly implement the Supreme Court’s directives issued in 2017.

Mining Beyond Permitted Limits

According to the petitioner, leaseholders are allegedly carrying out mining operations beyond the permitted limits and extracting minerals in excess of approved quantities. However, no punitive action has been initiated against them so far. The petitioner also pointed out that such unchecked illegal mining activities are resulting in significant revenue losses to the state exchequer.

The High Court has sought a comprehensive explanation from the Odisha government on these allegations and the measures undertaken to prevent illegal mining in Odisha.
