Bhubaneswar/Balasore: Flood situation in northern Orissa continued to be grim for the second day today with several low-lying areas getting submerged and paddy fields inundated, officials said.

While the swollen Baitarani river affected many low-lying areas of Keonjhar, Jajpur and Dhenkanal districts, the Subarnarekha and the Budhabalanga posed a threat to Balasore, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj districts, they said.

Though water level in Jalaka river was gradually receding in Balasore district, fresh breaches along its banks in Basta block caused inundation in vast paddy fields, water resource department sources said.

Flood water from rising Subarnarekha had spread to many areas in low-lying Bhograi and Jaleswar blocks, they said.A small bridge at Kudia in Basta-Baliapal main road was washed away affecting road communication while at least ten villages remained affected due to flood in Jalaka.

However, water level in major rivers like Mahanadi, Debi, Kusabhadra, Bansadhara and Rushikulya remained steady, the sources said.
