Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly on Wednesday witnessed stormy scenes over the rape and murder of a minor girl at Salia Sahi here when legislators cutting across party lines demanded statement of chief minister Naveen Patnaik on the gruesome incident.

The issue was raised by BJP state unit president K V Singh Deo during zero hour. "Why the victim's post-mortem was performed after 9 pm without the permission of her parents?” asked Deo adding the chief minister must give a statement on this.

BJP Legislature Party leader Jaynarayan Mishra also expressed concern about the issue and alleged that the State government was creating hurdles for the law to take its own course.

Slamming the BJD-ruled government, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh said, “The State government does not know how to respect women. We demand the chief minister should give his statement in the House immediately,” said Singh.

The demand too was echoed by Congress MLA Anup Sai. “The State is protecting the culprits while hiding the facts,” he alleged.

During the zero hour, as many as four BJP MLAs rushed to the well of the House and staged a dharna protesting against the incident. However, they withdrew the dharna, after the Parliamentary Affairs minister Kalpataru Das assured that the CM would give a statement on the matter in the House.
