One person was killed, and two others sustained critical injuries following a violent clash between two groups in Binika town of Sonepur district late Tuesday night, police said.
The incident took place near a pond in Ward No. 8, where a minor dispute reportedly escalated into a confrontation that turned deadly.
The deceased has been identified as Shambhu Meher of Nika Nuapada. He allegedly suffered fatal injuries during the clash. Two other individuals were seriously injured in the incident and were first admitted to the Binika Community Health Centre. As their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, for advanced treatment. Hospital sources said both are in critical condition.
Dispute Escalates into Violence
According to preliminary information, the incident stemmed from a minor altercation between two groups near the pond area. The argument reportedly intensified, leading to a knife attack that resulted in one death and multiple injuries.
The incident triggered tension in the locality, with residents gathering at the spot soon after the clash.
Police Action and Investigation
Police reached the scene after receiving information and initiated an investigation into the matter. One person has been detained for questioning in connection with the case.
Officials said efforts are underway to ascertain the exact cause of the clash and identify others allegedly involved. Some suspects are reported to be absconding.
