At least one person was killed and five others were injured in a major multi-vehicle accident near Banpur overbridge on National Highway 16 in Khordha district on Saturday.
As per reports, the serial accident occurred due to the collision involving three buses, which reportedly crashed into each other from behind.
Earlier this morning, a bus travelling from Similiguda to Bhubaneswar had stopped to avoid hitting a cow. At that spot, a motorcycle coming from behind was hit by another bus. Then, one more bus travelling from Visakhapatnam to Kolkata rammed into the second bus.
As a result of the collision, the pillion rider on the motorcycle was killed, while driver sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Bhubaneswar in a critical condition. The deceased has been identified as Shubhamjyoti Praharaj from Nimikheta village.
Among the injured, two passengers, along with the assistant drivers and helpers of the buses, are being treated at Balugaon Hospital. The drivers of the three buses involved in the serial accident fled the scene.
Upon being informed, Banpur police arrived at the site and started an investigation.
