Dhenkanal: A herd of elephant on Sunday trampled an old man to death in Rasasing village in Dhenkanal district following which the irate villagers resorted to road blockade on NH 55 with the dead body and demanded compensation for victim's family.

The Irate people also allegedly ransacked the jeep of forest department when the officials came to the village to review the situation.

The incident occurred when Birabar Parida was coming out of his house and faced the animal herd.

Sources said, a clash took place between two herds of elephants along the bank of river Bramhani near Baulpur village under Sadar range. An elephant calf died in the clash. One herd was coming from the spot while Parida met the animals from rear.

Notably, the wild jumbo had trampled another man of the village on December 28.
