Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today ordered the State government to pay an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh to the widow of Basant Pradhan, who was allegedly tortured and killed while in police custody in Bolangir last year.

Meanwhile, the OHRC also ordered to pay Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 25, 000 to Mohammed Bilal Ansari and Mohammed Afzal, who were allegedly tortured by the police while in their custody, the report said.

Basant Pradhan, a native of Hatapadapada of Titilagarh, was arrested by Bolangir Town police on charges of buying a stolen mobile phone in June 2014.

Reports said Pradhan was severely tortured while being in the police custody. When he collapse, he was taken to Titilagarh hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment there.
