Bird watchers, conservation committees, and the Wildlife Wing expect a higher tourist turnout this year compared to last season. Authorities say the annual arrival of these winged guests has triggered a steady inflow of tourists to Nalabana, Mangalajodi, Satapada, and other bird-rich zones of Chilika.

Birds Arrive from Across the Globe

The wetlands now resonate with the chirping of migratory birds flying thousands of miles from countries such as Malaysia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Russia, France, and the Netherlands. These birds flock to Chilika in search of food and favourable habitat conditions, turning the region into a vibrant winter refuge.

With their arrival, tourist movement has surged. Visitors from both within the country and abroad have begun arriving at bird hotspots, taking boat rides and guided tours. Local boatmen, bird guides, and binocular operators have geared up for the peak season, offering services to tourists eager to observe the birds from close range.

“I was having some bad luck with the wildlife view. But I am so much surprised to find so much wildlife here. I got to see many King Fishers,” said a foreign tourist.

Echoing the same Sanskruti, another tourist said, “I had a very good experience here. This is my third visit. During my one and a half hour visit, I got to see many birds. It’s a must visit place in winter.”

Chilika Remains a Preferred Winter Home

Despite global climate change, Chilika continues to remain a top destination for migratory birds. Officials expect bird numbers to increase further this year due to favourable weather. While over 200 species visit the lake annually, wildlife officials confirm that nearly 50 species in large numbers have already arrived.

“The numbers of avian guests are increasing. Migratory birds of around 50 species have already arrived. Besides, we expect a large footfall of tourists this year,” said Jay Behera, secretary of Mahaveer Bird Security Committee.

Extensive Protection Measures in Place

To ensure the safety of migratory birds and smooth management of tourist activity, extensive protection measures have been rolled out. Around 21 protection camps have been set up across locations such as Tangi, Balugaon, Rambha, and Satapada. More than 150 forest personnel have been deployed to monitor bird congregations and prevent poaching.

Wildlife authorities say arrangements have also been made to manage tourist flow and ensure safe, responsible viewing experiences.

Amlan Nayak, Chilika wildlife division DFO said, “After fortnightly assessment, we found that around 100 species have already arrived. We are hopeful- both bird and tourist numbers will increase.”
