Odisha woman locks up ailing in-laws

Nayagarh: In a shocking incident, an ailing elderly couple was found locked inside a house in Dihagaon village under Ranapur police limits of Nayagarh district. It is being alleged that the couple has been kept in confinement allegedly by their daughter-in-law.

According to sources, Kuni Pradhan of Khandiabandh village got married to Manoranjan of Dihagaon three years ago. However, both of them developed differences and the woman started staying with her parents after getting pregnant. She had then leveled allegations of exploitation against her husband Manoranjan, father-in-law Raghunath and mother-in-law Amulyabala. Around three months ago, Kuni returned to her in-laws home and put a lock on the main gate of the house and since, has allegedly kept Raghunath, a paralytic and Amulyabala, a Gastritis patient, in confinement, informed sources.

The matter came to light after daughter of the elderly couple filed a complaint with the Rajsunakhala Police. “My husband is very sick and even fell down today. There are only a few medicines left in stock. I wanted to take him for a doctor check up but was not allowed by my daughter-in-law,” said Amulyabala.

On the other hand, Kuni Pradhan has demanded that her husband Manoranjan should come and resolve the issue. “All my in-laws and my husband are harassing me. I am staying here for the last three months while my husband is neglecting me and my child. I want justice for my child,” said Kuni Pradhan.

Meanwhile, the Nayagarh Additional SP, Dilip Sahani has directed the officials to take action in connection with the incident. “I have given orders to the outpost in-charge to take necessary action in the case. Also, the inspector has been instructed to provide all possible help in taking the old couple to the doctor,” Sahani said.
