A dramatic rescue operation unfolded at Banajodi village in the Sadar range of Keonjhar after a male elephant accidentally fell into a functioning well. The incident occurred in the middle of a densely populated area, triggering panic among local residents and prompting an immediate response from multiple government departments.
Use Of Archimedes' Principle
Officials from the Odisha Forest Department, the Odisha Fire and Emergency Services, and the Odisha Police rushed to the spot and launched a coordinated rescue effort. The elephant had reportedly wandered into the village in search of food before accidentally falling into the nearly 30-foot-deep well.
Rescuers initially considered constructing an inclined ramp to help the elephant climb out. However, the idea was later dropped due to the risk of the well’s surrounding walls collapsing under pressure. Instead, the rescue team adopted a different strategy based on buoyancy, often explained by Archimedes' principle.

The strategy was shared in a post by the Post, Divisional Forest Officer, Keonjhar (T). The official posted on X “Archimedes principle (floating) won over Inclined plane (ramp) principle as ramp involved risk of wall collapse and despite floating involved risk of drowning in the midst of lethal fall in 30 feet deep well.”
Elephant Rescued Safely
Large quantities of water were poured into the well to gradually raise the water level and allow the elephant to float upward. The approach proved effective, as the rising water helped reduce the height the animal needed to climb. Though the method carried the risk of drowning, the rescue team carefully monitored the situation and ensured the elephant remained safe throughout the operation.
After several hours of intense effort, the elephant was successfully brought out of the well, drawing relief and applause from villagers who had gathered at the site. Officials said the operation highlighted excellent teamwork among the forest, fire, and police departments, as well as quick decision-making under challenging circumstances. The elephant was later guided back towards the nearby forest area.
