In a major administrative move, the Odisha government has directed that some of the post offices will now operate from the designated panchayat offices.
As many as 573 post offices have been identified for relocation to Panchayat buildings, and an official communication regarding the same has already been issued to all the district Collectors by the Panchayati Raj Department.
Although the directive covers 573 locations, only 71 post offices have been shifted so far. The relocation process for the remaining units is still underway. Authorities have been instructed to ensure that all pending post office relocations are completed by December 20.
As per the notification issued by the Panchayati Raj and DW Department of the Odisha government, housing Branch Post Offices (BOS) in Panchayat buildings or alternative Government premises such as CGHS Centers, Government Schools, Anganwadi Centers, PHCs, or CHCs will significantly improve accessibility of postal services for villagers.

"In this context, it was requested vide Department letter no. 14705 dated 06.06.2025 (copy enclosed) to take necessary steps to facilitate the shifting of BOS on a rent-free basis. However, as of 17.11.2025, only 71 out of 573 BOs have been relocated," read the notice.
"You are therefore requested to expedite actions in coordination with the concerned Postal Divisions and relevant line departments under your jurisdiction to relocate/shift the remaining Branch Post Offices to Panchayat buildings or suitable alternate Government premises on a rent-free basis by 20th December 2025. An Action Taken Report regarding this matter should be furnished to this Department and O/o the Chief Postmaster General at the earliest for further action at this end," it further read.
