Odisha to reappoint 800 retired police officers as Special Police Officers

The Odisha government has approved a proposal to reappoint around 800 retired police officers as Special Police Officers (SPOs) on a contractual basis for a period of one year to strengthen policing services across the state.

Retired personnel from the ranks of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Sub-Inspector (SI) and Inspector will be eligible for reappointment. The decision aims to utilise the experience and professional expertise of retired officers to support regular police personnel and enhance law and order management.

The Home Department has issued official instructions in this regard to the Director General of Police (DGP) and Inspector Generals through a formal communication. As per the guidelines, only those retired officers who are below 65 years of age will be considered for reappointment. Their Confidential Character Reports (CCR) must reflect a very good service record.

The guidelines further specify that eligible officers must have vacated their government quarters prior to consideration. Additionally, no disciplinary action should have been initiated or pending against them during their service tenure.

A special selection committee will be constituted by the Director General of Police to oversee the recruitment process. The selection will be carried out strictly in accordance with the guidelines issued by the General Administration Department.

The state government expects that the reappointment of retired police personnel will significantly contribute to improving policing efficiency, strengthening law and order and providing operational support to police units across various districts of Odisha.
