Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia announced that the Tourism Department will also assist in this bird head count effort. Recent observations indicate that temperatures have dropped by two to three Degrees Celsius, creating favourable conditions for migratory birds.

Alongside census of the winged guests, the department plans to enhance bird conservation infrastructure, including construction of modern watchtowers and enclosures. The Forest Minister also emphasised stricter measures to curb illegal hunting activities, ensuring a safer environment for different avian species.

This annual drive is expected to provide crucial data, which could be helpful for wildlife protection, habitat management, and biodiversity monitoring. The data will also help the State maintain its reputation as a prime destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.

“Climatic conditions are quite conducive for the avian guests this year. The bird head count will begin on January 6. The civil society, mass media, and government must work together with awareness for effective conservation of the birds,” the Forest Minister said.

“Cooperation of everyone is necessary to take forward the natural resources that Odisha possesses. Forest and Tourism departments will also work together to enhance conservation infrastructure, construct modern watchtowers and enclosures,” the Minister added.

Worth mentioning, earlier during the winter season last year, Odisha’s vital wetlands were back in focus as the mid-winter waterfowl census 2025 had highlighted the contribution of these extraordinary biodiversities towards providing safe grounds for the birds.

Over 15 lakh birds had been recorded, and more than 200 species were identified across the State’s wetlands during the annual drive.
