The Odisha government on Tuesday strengthened its emergency healthcare network by inducting 150 new ambulances into the 108 ambulance service. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi flagged off the first phase of the ambulances at a programme held at Kalinga Stadium in the state capital.
With the addition of the new ambulances, the 108 service is expected to provide faster and more efficient emergency medical assistance to people across the state. The toll-free 108 ambulance service offers free emergency transportation and medical care for accident victims, pregnant women, patients suffering from critical illnesses, and those affected during natural disasters.
Officials said citizens can avail of the service by dialling the toll-free number 108 to seek immediate medical assistance and transportation to government hospitals. The expansion is aimed at improving response time, particularly in rural and remote areas.
The government has also announced further strengthening of emergency health services. An investment of Rs 111 crore has been made to enhance emergency healthcare infrastructure, under which provisions have been made for the induction of 428 more new 108 ambulances in the next phase.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Majhi said, “We have added a new chapter under the healthcare sector today. Of the 428 ambulances, we have dedicated 150 ambulances to the people of the state in the first phase. By January end, the remaining ambulances will be rolled out, boosting emergency medical services.”
The initiative underscores the state government’s focus on improving access to timely and free emergency medical services and strengthening the public healthcare delivery system across Odisha.
