Apollo Hospitals in Bhubaneswar successfully performed a cancer surgery using Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) for the first time in Odisha, removing a rectal tumour without the need for a conventional incision.
According to information shared by Apollo Hospitals on Wednesday, the procedure was conducted on a 52-year-old patient suffering from an early-stage rectal tumour, which had not been resolved despite treatment at multiple hospitals earlier.
Reports stated that the operation was led by surgical oncologist Dr Manindra Nayak and his medical team at Apollo Cancer Centre. The tumour was accessed and removed through the rectal passage using laparoscopic instruments, avoiding extensive surgery and ensuring faster recovery.
Minimally Invasive Procedure Completed
Dr Nayak stated that his team opted against removing any segment of the rectum since the cancer was detected early and the patient was otherwise healthy. Instead, they used the TAMIS technique to excise the tumour precisely while stitching the defect internally.
“An early-stage cancer in the rectum was detected. We decided against surgically removing the affected part as the patient was healthy and the tumour was in an early stage. We used the laparoscopic technique to remove the tumour, and the defect was resolved. The patient was able to walk after six hours on the same day,” said Dr Manindra Nayak.
Faster Recovery And Fewer Complications
Hospital authorities confirmed that the patient stood up and walked within six hours of the surgery, significantly reducing post-operative pain and recovery time compared to conventional tumour removal methods. The procedure has also minimised risks of bowel dysfunction and lifestyle complications that often follow major rectal surgeries.
Doctors at Apollo said the successful adaptation of TAMIS marks a step forward in advanced cancer care in Odisha, especially for patients with early-stage tumours requiring organ-preserving treatment.
