Bhubaneswar: Glowing tributes were paid to legendary leader and chief minister and Biju Patnaik across Odisha on the occasion of his birth centenary today.

The day began with floral tributes being paid by leaders of ruling Biju Janta Dal (BJD) at Biju Patnaik’s statue in the Assembly complex and party office. A mini marathon was flagged off by the Sports and Youth Affairs minister Sudam Marandi on the occasion. Later, the winners of the mini marathon were awarded by the chief minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik.

A 18-feet high statue of Biju Patnaik was unveiled at the Airport Square in Bhubaneswar on the occasion. Moreover, a sand art exhibition was also inaugurated inside the lobby of the Bhubaneswar Airport.

Later in the day, members of the ruling BJD congregated at Baramunda ground, where the party has organised a grand function to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Biju Patnaik.

Prime minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer his tribute to the Biju Patnaik by tweeting “Biju Babu was a man of the masses & a visionary who devoted his life to serving society. I pay my tributes to him on his birth anniversary.”

“All the young leaders who have came in contact with late Biju Patnaik and have seen the work done by him wish a person like him to walk the earth again,” said Health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak.

In Paradip, another mega function has been organised by BJD leader Damodar Rout to mark the occasion. Rout kicked off the proceedings with a floral tribute to the great leader’s statue at Atharabanki. Subsequently, an all-faith prayer meeting was organised.

In Cuttack too, tributes poured in for Biju Patnaik. Floral tributes were paid at all the statues across the city on the occasion.

“We offered our floral tributes at all the statues across the city, including the party office. The observance will continue for one year,” said BJD leader Pratap Jena.
