Sun’s Northward Journey Marks Auspicious Day

Makar Sankranti signifies the Sun God’s movement from the Sagittarius zodiac sign into Capricorn, heralding the beginning of Uttarayan, considered highly auspicious. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip and offering charity during favourable moments on this day brings spiritual merit and prosperity. As a result, religious activities and rituals are being widely observed across temples and sacred sites.

Temples and Cities Abuzz With Festivities

Major temples across Odisha have witnessed heightened activity, with special rituals being conducted at the Puri Srimandir. As part of the observances, Makar rice brought by Maa Lakshmi from the Srimandir is scheduled to be offered to the presiding deity. Anticipating a large influx of devotees, the administration has made extensive arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of the festivities.

In Mayurbhanj district, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as a mass festival, with residents adorning new clothes and preparing traditional dishes at home. Meanwhile, Bhogi, a related festival, is being observed in southern Odisha. The city of Berhampur is also immersed in festive cheer, particularly among the Telugu community, where celebrations span three days, reflecting joy, cultural unity and devotion.
